Mac Mathghamhna, Mac Mathúna, Mahon, Mc Machon, Mc Mann.

The English Mc Mahon comes from the Gaelic Mac Mathghamha, from “mathghamquain” meaning ‘bear’. There were two different septs of the clan in Ireland, one in Corbaskin in west County Clare who were part of the Dal gCáis tribal grouping. The other sept was located in the Barony of Truagh in Co. Monaghan, and were rulers of the kingdom of Oriel from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. The name is ranked today as sixty fourth most numerous in Ireland, and remains strong in its original homelands of Clare and Monaghan.

The hand knit Mc Mahon sweater has a blackberry central panel, flanked by cables, tree of life and small diamonds on either side. The blackberry stitch represents the Holy Trinity, the cable stitch represents a wish for good luck, and diamonds are a wish for wealth. This beautiful Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional báinín (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a clan history and crest. It is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.
