The name Dolan is first found in Leinster where they are believed to be descended from Eochaidh, King of Leinster, and became one of the "Seven septs of Leix. Nowadays the name is generally found in counties Leitrim, Fermanagh and Cavan as well as in counties Galway and Roscommon. ). O Dubhláin is the generally accepted form in Irish today. The name is sometimes anglicised as Dowling or Doolan. The hand knit Dolan sweater has a central cable flanked by twists and honeycomb. The cable stitch represents a wish for good luck, and the honeycomb stitch symbolises work.
