O' Dempsey, O Diomasaigh.

The name Dempsey comes from the Irish ‘diomasach’ meaning proud. The O’ Dempsey families were a powerful sept in Counties Laois and Offaly. The families were consistently pro-English in the time of Elizabeth 1. However they took the Irish side later in the seventeenth century. The Dempsey’s were also notable among the priests in penal times.

The hand knit Dempsey sweater has three rows of honeycomb stitch flanked by moss, chevron and honeycomb rope on either side. The honeycomb stitch symbolises work, moss stitch represents nature. The cable stitch represents good luck. This beautiful hand knitted Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional báinin (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a Clan history and crest. It is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and with care, will last a lifetime.
